Botswana Visa & Kazungula Border Guide for Chobe Visitors

Botswana has relatively relaxed visa rules for most tourists, and the Kazungula border crossings between Botswana, Zambia, Zimbabwe and Namibia are straightforward once you know the process. This guide covers who needs a visa, what the entry procedure looks like at each border post relevant to Chobe visitors, and the paperwork you should have in hand.

Do I Need a Visa for Botswana?

Citizens of most English-speaking and European countries do not need a visa for short tourist visits. Visa-free entry is typically granted on arrival for 30-90 days, depending on nationality.

The Four Border Crossings Around Chobe

The Kazungula area is where Botswana, Zambia, Zimbabwe and Namibia meet at the Zambezi-Chobe confluence. Since 2021, a bridge has replaced the historic pontoon ferry between Botswana and Zambia.

Kazungula Bridge (Botswana ↔ Zambia)

Open 06h00 to 22h00 daily. Vehicle and passport processing on both sides takes 30-60 minutes at quiet times, 2-3 hours during peak. The Zambian side charges carbon tax, third-party insurance and a council levy for foreign-registered vehicles (estimate USD 40-60).

Kazungula Road Bridge (Botswana ↔ Zimbabwe, via Victoria Falls)

For visitors combining Chobe with Vic Falls. The Zimbabwe side levies road tolls and carbon tax (estimate USD 30-45 for foreign vehicles). Border hours 06h00 – 18h00. Allow 60-90 minutes for crossing including both sides.

Ngoma Bridge (Botswana ↔ Namibia)

On the western end of the Chobe Riverfront. Less busy than Kazungula. Hours 06h00 – 18h00. Standard vehicle and passport processing, minimal queues typically.

Pandamatenga (Botswana ↔ Zimbabwe)

A smaller crossing 100km south of Kasane, used mainly by trucks going to Bulawayo. Rarely used by tourists, but useful as a quieter alternative during major holiday backlogs at Kazungula.

• Open: 06h00 - 18h00.
• Procedure: similar to Kazungula but simpler — less traffic.

Papers You Must Have (Self-Drivers)

If you're crossing with your own or a rental vehicle, have the following ready:

• Passport with valid visa (or visa-free eligibility).
• Driving licence (+ International Driving Permit for most nationalities).
• Vehicle registration (the original or a certified copy).
• Cross-border letter from the rental company authorising the specific country or countries you'll enter. Your rental agreement normally includes one — double-check before collection.
• Proof of insurance for the destination country (often sold at the border itself for USD 10-25).
• Yellow Fever certificate if travelling from a yellow-fever country (see the health page).
• Cash in small USD denominations and BWP — ATMs are slow, card machines often offline.

Step-by-Step: Crossing Kazungula Bridge (Botswana → Zambia)

1. Arrive at Kazungula on the Botswana side. Park in the tourist lane (avoid the truck queue).
2. Proceed to the Botswana immigration counter for exit stamp.
3. Process vehicle export with customs if self-driving (brief).
4. Drive across the bridge (~900 metres).
5. Arrive at Zambian immigration. Queue for entry stamp.
6. Process vehicle temporary import at customs.
7. Pay carbon tax, insurance, council levy at designated counters (each has its own queue).
8. Show all receipts and stamps to the final police check.
9. Drive into Zambia.

Step-by-Step: Crossing Kazungula to Victoria Falls (Botswana → Zimbabwe)

1. Exit Botswana at Kazungula border. Tourist lane, immigration counter for stamp.
2. Drive south 500 metres to the Zimbabwean entry post.
3. Pay Zimbabwe visa (USD 30-55 for most nationalities) and obtain entry stamp.
4. Take the right amount USD cash with, as the card machines do not always work
5. Process vehicle import, pay road access fee and carbon tax.
6. Drive 70 km to Victoria Falls town.

The Zimbabwe Immigration Department has introduced a mandatory online immigration declaration form that all travelers must complete prior to arrival at any Zimbabwean border post, including Victoria Falls Airport.

If completed electronically prior to arrival, there should be no need to complete the form upon arrival however please ensure that you have a printed copy of the completed electronic version to give to officials at the port of entry (or take a screen shot of your online application)
