Where is Chobe National Park located?

Chobe National Park is situated in northern Botswana, near the borders of Zimbabwe, Zambia, and Namibia. The town of Kasane, located close to the park’s entrance, serves as the primary gateway for most visitors.

When to visit Chobe National Park?

Chobe National Park is a year-round destination, offering different wildlife experiences in each season. The Zebra Migration, stunning sunsets, diverse landscapes, and rich waterways make every visit unique. Below is a breakdown of the best times to visit based on weather, wildlife movements, and visitor preferences. Chobe National Park has two seasons that bookend the year — a long dry season from May to October and a wet summer from November to April. The dry months deliver Chobe’s most famous wildlife moments: thousands of elephants drinking on the riverfront at sunset, predators concentrated on the last surface water, open grass making every sighting visible. The wet season flips the script with lush green landscapes, newborn antelope, migratory birds, and some of the best photographic light of the year

Is Chobe National Park part of the Okavango Delta?

Although Chobe National Park and the Okavango Delta are both in Botswana, they are distinct regions. Chobe occupies the country’s north-eastern corner, whereas the Okavango Delta is more centrally located. Many visitors choose to explore both areas during a trip for an even richer safari experience.

How to get to Chobe National Park?

The nearest airport to Chobe National Park is Kasane International Airport (BBK), located just outside the park. Several international and regional airlines operate flights to and from Botswana’s major cities.

Can I self-drive?

A self-drive safari through Chobe National Park is one of the great wilderness experiences in southern Africa — and it is entirely doable in a properly equipped 4×4 without a guide. Most of Chobe’s roads are open to self-drivers, with park fees payable on arrival and the network links to the broader northern Botswana circuit (Savuti, Linyanti, Moremi, Okavango) for an extended route.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Which part of Chobe has the most elephants?

The Chobe Riverfront. Dry-season afternoon concentrations on the river can reach 200+ individuals — unmatched anywhere else in the park or continent. Savuti and Linyanti have plenty of elephants too, but the riverfront numbers are the headline act.

Is Savuti worth visiting if I’ve already been to the Chobe Riverfront?

Yes — they’re very different experiences. Riverfront is a water-focused, crowd-friendly elephant spectacle. Savuti is a savanna-and-predator show in a remote, drier setting. Repeat Chobe visitors almost always want to add Savuti on trip two.

https://chobenationalpark.co.za/kasane-vs-savuti-vs-linyanti/

How long do I need for Chobe and Victoria Falls?

5 nights minimum — 2 at Vic Falls, 3 at Chobe. 7 nights is more comfortable and lets you add optional activities (Zambezi rafting, Devil’s Pool, photographic boat) at both ends.

Is the Okavango Delta better than Chobe?

Neither is better — they’re different. The Okavango is a water-based safari experience via mokoro and motorboat; Chobe is land + big river concentrated wildlife. Most serious safari travellers do both in one trip for the contrast.

Can I do Chobe and Victoria Falls in one day?

Yes — day trips run in both directions. Most commonly: overnight at Vic Falls, day-trip to Chobe for a combined boat cruise and game drive.

What’s the most efficient order for a Chobe + Delta + Vic Falls trip?

Start with the Delta (fly Johannesburg → Maun), then Savuti or Linyanti (30 min flight), then Chobe Riverfront (from Kasane), then road to Vic Falls for the return. Minimises backtracking.

Can I drive from Chobe to the Okavango Delta?

Yes, two routes: Kasane → Savuti → Maun via sand track (2-3 days, 4×4 essential), or Kasane → Nata → Maun via tar (1 long day, sedan OK). From Maun you access the Delta by light aircraft. Driving saves charter costs but adds time.

Is Chobe better than Kruger?

Both parks are great options. If you are looking to combine Chobe boat cruises with game drives, whilst viewing numerous waterbird species, and combining it with a day trip to the Victoria Falls, then Chobe is for you. The Kruger National Park is a big park with good infrastructure, making it a convenient self-drive safari.

Chobe National Park entry gates and Park Rules

Chobe National Park has four operational entry gates and a clear set of rules that every visitor must follow. The Department of Wildlife and National Parks (DWNP) enforces these strictly — fines are significant, and expulsion from the park is possible for serious breaches. This page covers every gate, what it connects to, opening hours, fees, and the full park-rule set so you arrive ready and stay out of trouble.

https://chobenationalpark.co.za/chobe-national-park-gates-rules/

Do I Need a Visa for Botswana?

Botswana has relatively relaxed visa rules for most tourists, and the Kazungula border crossings between Botswana, Zambia, Zimbabwe and Namibia are straightforward once you know the process. This guide covers who needs a visa, what the entry procedure looks like at each border post relevant to Chobe visitors, and the paperwork you should have in hand. Citizens of most English-speaking and European countries do not need a visa for short tourist visits. Visa-free entry is typically granted on arrival for 30-90 days, depending on nationality.

Always check the official Government of Botswana website for your specific nationality before travel — lists change.

Chobe National Park is situated in a malaria area — but with sensible precautions it’s one of the safer wilderness destinations in Africa. This guide covers malaria risk and prevention, recommended vaccines, travel insurance, and what to expect from local medical facilities. We’re not doctors — treat this as a starting point and confirm specifics with your GP or a travel health clinic.
