Khwai River Airport & Flights

Khwai River Airport (IATA: KHW, ICAO: FBKR) serves as a vital bush airstrip and the primary gateway to the wildlife-rich Khwai Concession and the northern reaches of the Moremi Game Reserve. Located approximately 3 kilometers from the North Gate of Moremi, this airstrip is strategically positioned to welcome safari enthusiasts to one of Botswana's most prolific predator viewing areas. Unlike standard international airports, KHW is a remote gravel strip that acts as a lifeline for the luxury lodges and mobile safari camps scattered across the Okavango Delta's eastern fringes.

Bush Flying to the Khwai Concession

Flying into Khwai is an integral part of the safari experience. The airstrip accommodates light aircraft, primarily Cessna Grand Caravans and similar bush planes, which are capable of landing on the 1,130-meter gravel runway. The flight itself often doubles as a scenic aerial safari, offering passengers stunning bird's-eye views of the winding water channels, elephant herds, and vast floodplains below. While the airstrip is basic compared to international hubs, its location places travelers directly in the heart of the wilderness the moment they touch down.

Flight Connections and Logistics

Khwai River Airport is not served by commercial jetliners but relies on a network of "scheduled charter" flights operated by local aviation companies. These flights typically operate on a "seat-in-plane" basis and connect Khwai to Botswana's major travel hubs. Key connections include:

  • Maun (MUB) to Khwai: The most common route, taking approximately 30 to 45 minutes. Maun is the main tourism capital of Botswana.
  • Kasane (BBK) to Khwai: A popular route for travelers combining Chobe National Park or Victoria Falls with the Delta. This flight takes approximately 60 to 80 minutes.
  • Camp-to-Camp Hops: It is common for flights to stop at other airstrips en route to drop off or collect passengers, allowing visitors to easily combine different regions of the Okavango Delta.

Major operators servicing this route include Mack Air and Wilderness Air.

Critical Luggage Restrictions

⚠️ Important Packing Notice: Due to the small size of the aircraft operating into KHW, strict luggage restrictions are enforced for safety reasons.

Travelers must adhere to the following strict guidelines to ensure their baggage is accepted:

  • Soft-Sided Bags Only: Luggage must be soft (duffel style) with no rigid frames or hard sides. This allows bags to be manipulated into the aircraft's compact cargo pod.
  • Weight Limit: The standard allowance is usually 20kg (44lbs) total, which includes both checked luggage and hand luggage/camera equipment.
  • Dimensions: A typical size limit is 25cm (10") wide x 30cm (12") high x 62cm (24") long. Bags with wheels are generally discouraged unless the frame is not rigid.

Arrival and Lodge Transfers

There are no taxi ranks or car hire kiosks at Khwai River Airport. Instead, the "Meet and Greet" is handled directly by your lodge or safari operator. Upon landing, your pilot will assist with unloading bags, and you will be met by a safari guide in an open-sided 4x4 game viewer vehicle. The transfer to your lodge effectively becomes your first game drive, as you are likely to encounter wildlife immediately upon leaving the airstrip vicinity.

Facilities at the Airstrip

Travelers should manage their expectations regarding facilities at KHW, as it is a remote bush airstrip designed for functionality rather than luxury:

  • Terminal Building: There is a small, basic waiting area with a thatched roof to provide shade.
  • Restrooms: Basic toilet facilities are usually available, but it is advisable to use facilities in Maun or Kasane before departure if possible.
  • Services: There are no shops, ATMs, fuel stations, or food vendors at the airstrip. All necessary supplies should be purchased prior to arrival or will be provided by your lodge.

Gateway to the Okavango

Khwai River Airport provides immediate access to some of the most sought-after accommodation in Botswana. The area is renowned for its high density of elephants, excellent leopard sightings, and the presence of endangered African wild dogs.
