Kasane vs Savuti vs Linyanti: Which Part of Chobe to Visit?

Chobe National Park is big — 11,700 km² big — and its three main tourist regions offer very different experiences. The Chobe Riverfront around Kasane is famous for elephants and easy access; Savuti delivers predator-focused savanna safari; Linyanti is the quiet, exclusive option favoured by repeat Africa travellers. Which one you pick depends on budget, time, and what you want to see.

Chobe Riverfront (Kasane)

What It's Known For

The Riverfront is the image most people associate with Chobe: 100+ elephants drinking on the riverbank at sunset, hippos honking in the water, fish eagles calling overhead. The river is the draw. Afternoon boat cruises are the signature experience and arguably the most photogenic safari activity in Africa.

Access and Logistics

Kasane Airport has daily flights from Johannesburg, Cape Town, Maun and Gaborone. Lodges are 5-30 minutes from the airport. You can fly in in the morning, do an afternoon boat cruise, and be on the water the same day. No other Chobe region is this accessible.

Best For

  • First-time African safari travellers.
  • Short trips (2-3 nights).
  • Combining Chobe with Victoria Falls.
  • Families with younger children (shorter transfers, wider range of lodge styles).
  • Photographers targeting classic elephant and boat-photography shots.
  • Any budget — from backpacker B&Bs to ultra-luxury lodges.

Savuti

What It's Known For

Savuti is a drier, more classic-savanna environment famous for its predator activity. Documentary crews have filmed Savuti's lion prides hunting elephant — rare behaviour found regularly here. Rock paintings in the Gubatsaa Hills, the cyclical Savuti Channel, elephant herds against dead-tree forests, and remote wilderness feeling are all Savuti signatures.

Access and Logistics

Two options:

  • Fly-in from Maun or Kasane. 25-45 minute charter to a Savuti airstrip. Typical lodge packages include transfers.
  • Self-drive from Maun via Mababe Gate (5 hours) or from Kasane via the Linyanti sand track and Ghoha Gate (4+ hours). Serious 4×4 territory — see the self-drive guide.

Best For

  • Wildlife enthusiasts prioritising predators over elephant numbers.
  • Experienced safari self-drivers wanting the classic Botswana circuit.
  • Documentary-makers, researchers, photographers shooting predator action.

Linyanti

What It's Known For

Linyanti is the quiet specialist option. Wild dogs, leopards, breeding elephant herds in riverine forest, and some of Africa's best Pel's fishing owl territory.

Best For

  • Repeat Africa travellers looking for what's rare: genuine solitude + big cats + wild dog.
  • Pel's fishing owl and birding specialists.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which part of Chobe has the most elephants?

The Chobe Riverfront. Dry-season afternoon concentrations on the river can reach 200+ individuals — unmatched anywhere else in the park or continent. Savuti and Linyanti have plenty of elephants too, but the riverfront numbers are the headline act.

Is Savuti worth visiting if I've already been to the Chobe Riverfront?

Yes — they're very different experiences. Riverfront is a water-focused, crowd-friendly elephant spectacle. Savuti is a savanna-and-predator show in a remote, drier setting. Repeat Chobe visitors almost always want to add Savuti on trip two.
