Known for its incredible biodiversity and large elephant population, the park has become one of Africa’s most sought-after safari destinations. Our Chobe National Park Map has been designed to help visitors visualise the region, plan their trip, and easily locate key landmarks including entry gates, airports, and lodges.

Chobe National Park's Prime Location

Chobe National Park is strategically located in the northern corner of Botswana, making it a cornerstone of the Kavango-Zambezi Transfrontier Conservation Area (KAZA). Its proximity to the borders of Namibia, Zambia, and Zimbabwe makes it an easily accessible and popular destination for cross-border safaris and Chobe day trips. The park is a short drive from the town of Kasane, the main hub for visitors to the region.

How to Get to Chobe National Park

  • By Air: The easiest way to reach Chobe is by flying into Kasane Airport (BBK). Many lodges offer transfers from the airport. You can also fly into Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe (VFA), or Livingstone, Zambia (LVI), both of which are a short road transfer away.
  • By Road: For Chobe National Park self drive enthusiasts, the park is accessible by 4x4 vehicles. The main roads to Kasane are tarred and in good condition, but within the park, the roads are sandy tracks requiring a 4x4. See our Chobe National Park information page for detailed self-drive tips and entry requirements.

Exploring the Regions of Chobe

Chobe National Park is not a single, uniform landscape. It is a mosaic of different ecosystems, each with its own unique character and wildlife viewing opportunities. Our Chobe river map and regional guide below will help you understand the distinct areas and the remarkable Chobe National Park animals found in each.

The Chobe Riverfront (Serondela)

The most famous and accessible part of the park, the Chobe Riverfront, is renowned for its enormous herds of elephants and Cape buffalo, especially during the dry season (May to October). The river itself is a hub of activity, with hippos, crocodiles, and a stunning variety of birdlife. A boat cruise on the Chobe River is an essential experience, and several Chobe houseboats offer multi-day stays on the water. Browse Kasane accommodation for lodges near the riverfront.

Savuti Marsh

In the western part of the park, the Savuti Marsh is a legendary wildlife-watching destination within Chobe National Park. It is known for its large prides of lions that have learned to prey on elephants, as well as for sightings of cheetahs, leopards, and African wild dogs. The Savuti Channel, which feeds the marsh, has a fascinating history of drying up and flowing again, dramatically changing the landscape and the wildlife dynamics. Explore Savuti accommodation options including Savute Safari Lodge and Ghoha Hills Savuti Lodge.

Linyanti Marsh

To the north of Savuti, the Linyanti Marsh is a more remote and exclusive area, known for its pristine wilderness and large concentrations of wildlife. The Linyanti River forms the border with Namibia, and the area's lagoons and riverine woodlands are home to elephants, lions, and the rare roan and sable antelopes. View Linyanti accommodation for lodges in this secluded corner of the park.

Nogatsaa and Tchinga

This less-visited area of the park is characterised by clay pans that hold water well into the dry season, attracting a variety of Chobe National Park animals including large numbers of elephants and a good population of eland. It is an excellent destination for Chobe game drives away from the main tourist circuits.

Key Landmarks on Our Chobe National Park Map

Below is a complete reference of every landmark featured on our interactive map, including park entry gates, natural landmarks, cultural and historical sites, airports, accommodation, and nearby attractions. Use this guide alongside the map above to plan your Chobe safari adventure.

Natural Landmarks & Regions

Chobe Riverfront (Serondela Floodplains)

GPS coordinates: -17.8000, 25.1200

The most visited section of Chobe National Park, renowned for enormous elephant and buffalo herds gathering along lush floodplains during the dry season (May–October). The Chobe River floodplains are the only place in Botswana where the rare puku antelope can be found. A boat cruise along this stretch of river is an essential experience.

Savuti Marsh

GPS coordinates: -18.5700, 24.0700

A relic of a vast ancient inland lake in the western stretch of the park, now fed by the erratic Savuti Channel. The Savuti region is famous for large lion prides that hunt elephants, and for dramatic predator action documented in National Geographic wildlife films. During dry seasons, rhinoceros, warthog, kudu, impala, zebra, and wildebeest congregate here.

Savuti Channel

GPS coordinates: -18.5400, 24.0500

Known locally as the "Stolen River," this enigmatic waterway runs approximately 100 kilometres from the Linyanti system to the Mababe Depression. It dries up and flows again due to underground tectonic activity rather than rainfall — most recently reaching the Savuti Marsh in 2010 after being dry since 1982. Its banks are lined with iconic dead acacia trees, creating one of Chobe's most recognisable landscapes.

Linyanti Marsh

GPS coordinates: -18.3500, 23.9400

A pristine wilderness area in the park's remote north-west corner, where the Linyanti River forms the border with Namibia. The marshes and surrounding riverine woodlands support large concentrations of lion prides, African leopard, African wild dog, and rare roan and sable antelope. Bird diversity is exceptionally rich throughout the area.

Nogatsaa Pans

GPS coordinates: -18.7500, 24.7000

A quiet, seldom-visited area of clay pans situated in the hot, dry hinterland between the Linyanti and Savuti marshes. The pans hold water well into the dry season, attracting large numbers of elephants and one of Chobe's best populations of common eland. An excellent choice for visitors seeking solitude away from the main tourist circuits.

Sedudu (Kasikili) Island

GPS coordinates: -17.8200, 25.1300

A 3.5 km² fluvial island in the Chobe River, approximately 1.5 kilometres upstream from Kasane. The island is subject to seasonal flooding from around March each year and is one of the top birding spots in the park. Historically notable as the subject of a 1999 International Court of Justice ruling that confirmed the island as part of Botswana's territory.

Gubatsa Hills (Ghoha Hills)

GPS coordinates: -18.5800, 24.0600

Quartzite and dolerite outcrops rising sharply from the flat Savuti plains, pushed to the surface by ancient tectonic activity. These low hills — barely more than 30 metres tall — are a known haunt of leopards, with klipspringers often spotted on the rocky slopes. The hills also house ancient San rock art (see below) and offer panoramic views over the Savuti Channel and marsh.

Mababe Depression

GPS coordinates: -19.0500, 24.0000

The dried remnant of a vast prehistoric lake at the park's southern edge, now an expansive open grassland. Zebra and wildebeest migrate through this area seasonally, and it connects to Chobe National Park via the Mababe Gate route from Moremi Game Reserve.

Komane Pans

GPS coordinates: -18.5054, 24.5598

Large seasonal pans in the park's northern plains that hold water for most of the year, attracting diverse wildlife including elephants, buffalo, and a variety of antelope species. Located between the Savuti and Nogatsaa areas.

The Savuti Triangle

GPS coordinates: -18.6845, 24.0986

A renowned wildlife area within Chobe National Park, famous for its incredible predator sightings and dramatic, untamed wilderness. It is a prime destination for safari enthusiasts seeking raw, big-game encounters.

Cultural & Historical Sites

San Rock Paintings (Gobabis Hill)

GPS coordinates: -18.5939, 24.0795

Ancient rock art estimated at 3,000–4,000 years old, located on Gobabis Hill (also called Bushman Hill) in the Savuti region. The paintings depict elephants, giraffes, hippos, sable antelope, eland, and a puff adder, offering a window into the spiritual and daily life of the San people who once roamed these plains. The site is signposted as "Rock Paintings" off the main Savuti track, with parking at the base and a short 150-metre climb to the paintings.

Serondela Ruins

GPS coordinates: -17.8350, 25.0100

Remnants of the former timber industry settlement that operated within the park boundaries until the 1970s. When the area was declared a national park in 1968, the settlement at Serondela — where the timber industry had proliferated — was gradually relocated. Today, the ruins serve as a historical marker of the park's transition from industrial use to wildlife conservation.
